How it all started...
In September 2016, a small group of households gathered to share their interest in forming a cohousing community in Skagit County. One year later, we contracted with Kathryn McCamant of CoHousing Solutions to guide us through the development process. In May of 2018 we secured a beautiful four-acre property in Anacortes, Washington.
In July of 2018 we selected Schemata Workshop in Seattle to design our project. Grace Kim, Schemata Workshop Principal, has designed other cohousing neighborhoods and lives with her family in Capitol Hill Cohousing. With Schemata Workshop on board we held our design workshops. We were thrilled with our final designs.
In the Summer of 2019, we partnered with Tad Fairbank to serve as our developer and Fairbank Construction as our General Contractor. Fairbank Construction built Quimper Village in Port Townsend and their experience was invaluable to us.
We broke ground in November 2020 and our first residents moved in September 2022.
We now have all 30 homes occupied and are loving our community.

Skagit Commons: What's in our name?
In 2020, we changed our name from Skagit Cohousing to Skagit Commons. These two carefully selected words carry much history, culture and meaning for us.
The word “Skagit” (rhymes with “magic”) is Lushootseed (a dialect in the Coast Salish language group) and describes a people and a place. Today it also refers to a special Watershed; a majestic Valley; a grand River; a beautiful Bay; and two resident Tribes.
The word “Commons” is a word that reflects the values of the Cohousing movement (e.g., sharing, caring, respecting, etc.) and our commitment to these values. In this country, the idea of a “Commons” dates back to early New England and refers to to a parcel of land shared and stewarded by local communities.
